Above and Beyond

Fun in the snow at HFHC

The ‘Beast from The East’ and Storm Emma, with its huge blanket of snow, affected swathes of the country last week with many schools closed, public transport cancelled and people struggling to get to work. But, just as every other day of the year, the individuals we support needed care. Our staff team showed incredible resilience and dedication, going above and beyond to ensure the individuals were not just safe, but well supported.

During these extreme weather conditions staff showed a fantastic ONE TEAM attitude, pulling together to make sure everyone was safe. Staff took great lengths to get to work, with road conditions meaning a 4-hour journey for some, with others hiking through the snow for miles to reach their shift. The severe snow meant buried cars were also dug out and 4×4 drivers collected and dropped off other staff cut off by lack of public transport; staff also picked up extra shifts to cover those unable to get in, with many sleeping at work to ensure staff would be available in the morning, and refusing to go home until assured that all staff were able to come in to replace them.

There are no ‘snow days’ in social care. Everyone’s humbling dedication to their job and tremendous support throughout this period has been fantastic. Thank you all!
