At Home From Home Care, we’re all about giving everyone the chance to make a real difference to the lives of adults with learning disabilities, autism and complex physical and mental health – whatever their career background.
Our wonderful colleagues all come from diverse career backgrounds and we encourage them to use their previous experience to find a role they’re passionate about, where everyone has a shared sense of purpose and belonging.
Whether they’ve come from retail, hospitality or construction, we help our colleagues to unlock their true potential so they can have fulfilling, rewarding careers.
Applying transferable skills
We offer around 100 diverse roles and we help our colleagues to develop into the one that truly suits them – where they can grow, develop their skills and improve the lives of others.
You’d be surprised at how many transferable skills learnt from non-care jobs can be applied to a career in care – and lots of our colleagues have proved that this is the case!
For example, you may not think that skills learnt from working as a semi-professional boxer have any use when working with adults with learning disabilities and complex needs. But Daniel, one of our TRACS Partners, did just that.
He said “I fancied a career change, found this job on Indeed and thought I’d give it a go! Transferable skills I’ve brought with me are working as part of a team, patience and my strong work ethic. I really enjoy my job – it’s fun, flexible and I have a lot of opportunities to grow.”
Lots of our personal support workers have come from diverse backgrounds too, including plumbing, bricklaying, retail, planning, and even party hosting!
Ellie-Mae, who used to be a party host, said: “I was intrigued about the care industry and thought I’d give it a go. There’s always a positive attitude on shift and you do something new and exciting each day.”
Promoting progression
We’re passionate about looking after our colleagues and one way we do this is by offering rapid career progression through training and development – something that doesn’t happen in all careers.
Lily, one of our support workers, used to be a bricklayer and switched to a career in care for better development. She said: “I love working in care compared to my old job because there are better progression opportunities, it’s better pay and I enjoy making a difference.”
When working with us, our colleagues never stop growing and developing skills, and we continuously invest in everybody’s professional development. We give colleagues the opportunity to progress into the 100 different roles that make us so unique, with our shared sense of purpose and belonging.
Our mentoring programme and monthly one-to-ones give colleagues feedback and make sure they have the resources to get to where they want to be. And the proof is in the pudding, as the majority of people earn 53% more after five years with us.
Making a real difference
No matter what your career background is, nothing beats working in a meaningful, rewarding role where you’re always helping others.
Byron, one of our TRACS Partners, used to work as a nightclub bouncer in Leeds. He said: “I really wanted a new change and to make a difference to the lives of others. The training has been great and I’m loving my role – it feels amazing to be giving back and doing something meaningful.”
Being part of a supportive ONE TEAM culture
At Home From Home Care, our colleagues have access to a career where they can grow, develop skills and improve the lives of others. Not only this, but we offer them a workplace that has values they won’t find in many other jobs.
We adopt a dynamic culture that shapes care delivery and encourages creativity through colleague engagement. To do this, transparency is key – we’re not afraid to reflect on what could be better and how we can improve to help us underpin confident care. We support our colleagues to develop creative solutions, empowering them and listening to them as they suggest ways for us to improve.
Our ethos is also shaped by our ONE TEAM culture where we work collaboratively and every colleague plays a part, helping to create a sense of belonging. And our values of fairness and justness underpin this – we understand that honest mistakes are sometimes made with the best intentions, and encourage our colleagues to learn from these.
Every role with Home From Home Care has something that few other careers can offer. Everyone’s job, from support worker to data analyst, has real purpose and importance because everything we do is about improving the lives of others.
If you’re considering a career change and are interested in care work, take a look at our current vacancies and get in touch – we’d love to hear from you and welcome you to the team.
